Graduate Reliability Engineer

Silverstone, UK

"I knew what I wanted from the next stage of my career, and when I learned more about what Cadillac Formula 1® Team was building, it was clear this was the environment in which to do it." Charlotte completed a degree in Mechanical Engineering with a work placement in F1®. When she finished her Master’s and began looking for a full-time opportunity, she stood out to us, and we stood out to her. Here’s why.

Growing up on a farm, I spent my childhood operating tractors and farm machinery. It gave me an early, intuitive understanding of mechanical systems and problem solving under real conditions; something that has stayed with me.

By the time I graduated, I already had a year of F1® experience behind me through my industrial placement at an established team. Once I had experienced the pace, the precision, and the engineering challenge, continuing in the industry became an obvious direction to pursue. I had worked within a large, mature organization, begun building an industry network, and understood what it meant to operate in a high-performance environment. What I was looking for next was a role with real depth of involvement; somewhere I could contribute meaningfully from day one, rather than being one small part of a very large machine.

When a former colleague mentioned that Cadillac F1® Team was hiring, the timing made sense. Joining a Team at this stage of its development meant the opportunity for genuine ownership and broad exposure, exactly what I was after. The setting for my interview, a portacabin in an empty warehouse, only reinforced that. Despite the location, the vision was clear: this was a Team at the beginning of something special, and I wanted to be part of building it. I joined as a Graduate Reliability Engineer in September 2025.

To anyone considering a similar path, my advice is to seek out challenging environments and demonstrate that you can perform in them. A passion for motorsport helps, but it isn’t the deciding factor. I was an example of someone whose experience and extracurricular activities were not motorsport-based: what matters is the ability to learn quickly, operate outside your comfort zone, and respond constructively to real-world problems. Cadillac Formula 1® Team recognizes the importance of varied experience and the strength in diverse thought: in interviews, I discussed my experience working night shifts in intensive care at a veterinary surgery and on racing yachts. Not motorsport credentials, but clear examples of composure under pressure and a willingness to take on challenging situations.

That mindset has served me well in the Reliability Team. In the months before the car turned a wheel on track, we were central to the process: supporting build activities, testing, driver fits, and continuous iterations. Now we are racing, we continue to provide the critical feedback loop between the garage floor and the design office, flagging issues, investigating failures, and working with the mechanics and designers to find practical solutions. The breadth of exposure has been excellent, and the role carries the opportunity for genuine responsibility at every stage.

There are very few opportunities to build an F1® car from the ground up. Being part of that process is something that doesn’t come around often.

What does the future hold?

I was fortunate to attend winter testing in Bahrain, my first week trackside. The excitement and awe at seeing our cars running up close only deepened my motivation to keep pushing myself. It was an important milestone, and it reinforced what had drawn me to the Team in the first place. The workload was tough and required a lot of focus, but there was also a genuine collective energy in the garage. People who are proud of what they’re building and invested in each other’s success. That combination of ambition and purpose aligns with the engineer I want to become. It’s the Cadillac Formula 1® Team people-focused culture, one that meets every challenge with enthusiasm, that makes it the place to become her.
